You cannot stop a cat scratching. You can only choose where it happens. Cats need one surface to stretch up against and one to dig into lying down, right next to the furniture they use now.
The Territory Panel goes on the wall beside the sofa for the tall stretch. The Territory Lounge sits on the floor for the horizontal dig, and the nap after. The Hunt Wand burns off the energy that ends up in your upholstery.

Before you buy
Put a better scratching surface right next to the couch, one vertical and one horizontal. Reward them for using it. Cover the damaged spot for a couple of weeks with a throw or double-sided tape so the new scratcher is the better option. Never punish scratching; it is normal and they need it.
Cats scratch two ways: reaching up a vertical surface and digging into a horizontal one. Most cats do both. One of each, placed where they already scratch, covers it.
Most cats start using a well-placed scratcher within days. The sofa habit fades over two to four weeks as the new spots take on their scent.
